EES at Prague Airport: What to Expect at the Border
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is the EU’s automated register of who crosses the Schengen external border and when. It replaces the passport stamp with an electronic record, takes your fingerprints and photograph, and counts your days of stay for you. It runs at every international airport in the Czech Republic and across all 29 Schengen countries.

What actually changed
- Passport stamps are gone — entries and exits are recorded electronically.
- Biometrics are collected: four fingerprints from each hand, plus a facial image.
- Your 90-days-in-180 allowance is tracked automatically rather than counted by hand.
The rollout began on 12 October 2025 and the system reached full operation at all external borders on 10 April 2026. The Czech Republic was one of the few member states to implement it in full from the first day, fingerprints and photographs included.

If you are flying in from London, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, New York or Dubai, you arrive at Terminal 1 and the EES rules are yours.
Who it applies to
Yes: visa-free travellers from outside the EU — British, American, Canadian, Japanese, South Korean and other nationals — and holders of short-stay type C Schengen visas.
No: citizens of the EU and the Schengen area, holders of a residence permit in any EU country, and holders of long-stay type D visas for work or study.
Children under 12 do not give fingerprints, but their details are still registered.
The kiosk, step by step
Prague Airport has 56 self-service kiosks in the Terminal 1 arrivals area. The timings below come from a walkthrough of the Prague kiosks by Simon Calder of The Independent.
- Find the kiosk (0–5 seconds). Follow the signs to passport control; the kiosks come first.
- Scan your passport (5–10 seconds), photo page down. The screen shows your picture, name and date of birth to confirm.
- Photograph (45–57 seconds). Look straight at the camera. No hat, no sunglasses, no mask.
- Fingerprints (57 seconds to 1:34). Four fingers of the left hand, then four of the right. Green means done, yellow means try again, red means it failed.
- Questions (1:35 to 2:19). Purpose of the trip, whether you have a return ticket, how you are paying for it, insurance, and your planned date of departure.
- Border officer (from 2:26). Once the screen says you are all set, go to the desk for the final check.
A first registration takes roughly two and a half to three minutes per person when the system behaves. A later crossing, with your data already on file, is much quicker.
How long the queue really is
Prague has been named repeatedly as a pressure point since EES started. When several long-haul flights land together — mornings and evenings are the worst — waits of up to an hour are possible, and in the first days after launch queues reached ninety minutes.
Allow 30 to 60 minutes for passport control at Terminal 1, on top of whatever you had planned. If you have booked a transfer with us this is not your problem: we track the flight and the driver waits, however long the border takes.
How to spend less time at the border
- The Travel to Europe app. The EU app lets you pre-register your passport details and photo before you travel. Airports handle pre-registration differently, so you may still be sent to a kiosk or an officer.
- Have the passport ready, and make sure your fingers are clean and dry — wet or cold fingers are the usual reason a scan fails.
- Know your answers before you reach the kiosk: purpose of trip, return date.
- Pick your arrival time. Terminal 1 peaks in the morning and evening with flights from the UK, Turkey and the USA. A midday arrival is a different experience.
Who skips the kiosks
Prague Airport lists these as exempt from kiosk registration: holders of a residence permit or long-stay visa, whose data is already on file; crew; passengers with reduced mobility; children under 12 or under 140 cm; and holders of non-biometric passports. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens should use the EU/EEA/CH lane.
Flying out of Prague through Terminal 1
EES applies on the way out as well. Arrive at least two and a half to three hours before departure, clear passport control as soon as you have checked in rather than leaving it late, and note that at Terminal 1 passport control comes before the gate area, with the security check at the gate itself.
Questions people ask
Do I need to do anything before I travel? No. EES is handled at the border. There is nothing to apply for and nothing to pay online.
Is EES the same as ETIAS? No. EES is running now and records entries and exits at the border. ETIAS is a separate, future travel authorisation for visa-free travellers, expected towards the end of 2026.
How much time should I allow in Prague? Thirty to sixty minutes for passport control at Terminal 1, more at peak hours.
What is stored, and for how long? Your name, passport details, biometrics and the dates you entered and left, for three years and one day after your last exit.
I hold an EU residence permit. Then EES does not apply to you; show the permit at the border.
Can I refuse the biometrics? No. It is a legal requirement for third-country nationals entering the Schengen area.
Land at Prague and go straight to your hotel
The new checks can add an unpredictable half hour to your arrival. A booked transfer takes that worry out of it: your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, waiting is free because we track the flight, the price is fixed in advance, and you are not hunting for a taxi after a long flight and a long border queue.
