Why there is no meter
Karlovy Vary is the most popular spa destination out of Prague, which is why it attracts the most «we’ll agree on the way» offers. Over ninety minutes a taximeter reaches a total you only see at the end — and people come to a spa with suitcases for two or three weeks, while luggage in the Czech Republic is usually charged on top.
With us the luggage is in the price, the sum is known in advance, and the driver delivers to the spa building rather than «the centre». A licensed Czech taxi must carry a yellow roof lamp, the operator’s name and a price list on the door, a working meter, and must issue a printed receipt — booked ahead, there is nothing to check.
The drive
An hour and a half west on the D6. The road has been upgraded section by section and is now expressway almost the whole way.
Karlovy Vary sits close to the German border: Nuremberg is about 220 kilometres away, Dresden 200 and Mariánské Lázně 50. We drive those routes too.
What is in Karlovy Vary
The spa was founded in the fourteenth century by Charles IV, and the water comes out of the ground at up to 73 °C. There are thirteen springs, twelve of them under colonnades where the water is drunk from porcelain sipping cups.
The Mill and Park colonnades, the Hot Spring colonnade with the Vřídlo geyser shooting twelve metres up, the Grandhotel Pupp from the films, and the Diana lookout tower above the town with its funicular. Local specialities: Becherovka, Karlovy Vary wafers and the mineral salt.
The international film festival takes place in early July: the town is full and the car must be booked well ahead.
