Why there is no meter
Nobody travels light to a spa: a course of treatment means two or three weeks and the suitcases to match. A street taxi counts kilometres and minutes, and in the Czech Republic luggage is usually charged on top. With us the luggage is in the price and the total is known before you leave.
A licensed Czech taxi must carry a yellow roof lamp, the operator’s name and a price list on the door, a working meter, and must issue a printed receipt. Booking ahead saves you checking any of that on the pavement: the car and the driver’s name arrive in the confirmation.
The drive
The route runs north-west on the D8 past Terezín and turns off for Teplice before the descent into the Ústí region. It is motorway almost the whole way, and an hour and a bit is an honest door-to-door figure.
Teplice sits at the foot of the Ore Mountains, 25 kilometres from the German border and 60 from Dresden — closer than Prague. Many visitors combine the spa with a day across the border.
What is in Teplice
The oldest spa town in Central Europe: the baths have been in use since 1156 and the water comes out of the ground at 39–44 °C. In the nineteenth century the town was called the salon of Europe — Beethoven, Goethe, Chopin and Wagner all took the waters, and it was here in 1812 that Goethe and Beethoven had their famous meeting.
Castle Square holds the château museum and a baroque plague column; the spa park has the colonnade and drinking springs; the spa houses Beethoven, Imperial and Nové lázně treat the musculoskeletal system and circulation. Above the town stands Doubravka hill with its lookout tower.
