The drive
The route runs north-west on the D8 past Terezín and turns off for Teplice just before the descent into the Ústí region. It is motorway almost the whole way, and an hour and a bit is an honest door-to-door figure.
Teplice sits at the foot of the Ore Mountains, 25 kilometres from the German border. Many visitors combine the spa with a day in Dresden, which is only 60 kilometres away — closer than Prague.
Why people go to Teplice
Teplice is the oldest spa town in Central Europe. The baths have been in use since 1156, when Queen Judith founded a monastery beside the hot springs; the water comes out of the ground at 39–44 °C.
In the nineteenth century the town was called the salon of Europe. Beethoven, Goethe, Chopin and Wagner all took the waters here, and it was in Teplice in 1812 that Goethe and Beethoven had their famous meeting.
What there is today:
- Castle Square, with the château that now holds the regional museum, and a baroque plague column
- The spa park and colonnade — the classic promenade with drinking springs
- The spa houses — Beethoven, Imperial, Nové lázně — treating the musculoskeletal system and circulation
- Doubravka — a hill with a lookout tower above the town
- The Ore Mountains — Cínovec and Bohosudov nearby, with skiing in winter
Train, coach or car
- Train — about 1 hour 30 minutes, roughly 120 CZK, from Praha hlavní or Masarykovo nádraží. The station is not next to the spa houses, so a taxi finishes the journey
- Coach — about 1 hour 20 minutes, cheaper than the train, arriving at the bus station
- Private transfer — an hour and a bit, €99 per car. Straight to the spa building, with the suitcases, and no changes. For a spa stay that is usually the deciding argument: people arrive with a lot of luggage
