Why there is no meter
Dresden is the most popular day trip out of Prague, which is exactly why it attracts the most «we’ll agree on the price when we get there» offers. We fix the sum in the confirmation and include the Czech vignette and German road charges.
A licensed Czech taxi must carry a yellow roof lamp, the operator’s name and a price list on the door, a working meter, and must issue a receipt. As a rule a street car will not cross the border at all — the meter does not apply outside the country, and the driver needs to know the route in advance.
The drive
The route runs north on the D8, crosses the border near Petrovice and continues on the German A17 down into the Elbe valley. There is no passport control: both countries are in Schengen, and you mainly notice the border because the road signs change colour.
Two hours is the normal door-to-door time. Summer Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings can add twenty minutes around the Ústí nad Labem stretch.
There is plenty worth stopping for on the way: Hřensko and the Pravčická brána, Bad Schandau, Königstein fortress on its table mountain, Děčín with its château and rose garden. A short stop costs nothing; longer waiting is quoted when you book.
What is in Dresden
Almost everything fits into the Altstadt and can be walked in a day. The Frauenkirche was destroyed completely in 1945 and rebuilt by 2005 from the salvaged stones. The Zwinger holds the Old Masters Gallery and Raphael’s Sistine Madonna. There is the Semperoper, and the Brühl Terrace — the balcony of Europe — above the Elbe. The Grünes Gewölbe, treasury of the Saxon electors, admits visitors to the historic rooms by timed slot and only with a booking.
The Striezelmarkt, Germany’s oldest Christmas market, runs through December.
Worth knowing: the old town is partly pedestrianised, and the nearest tram stop to a hotel is not always as close as the map suggests. The driver takes you to the address itself.
