Why the airport is a good place to start
Václav Havel Airport sits on the north-western edge of Prague, which is already the Dresden side of the city. A car from the airport takes the ring road straight to the D8 and never has to cross the centre, so the airport run costs the same as a transfer from a Prague hotel.
Public transport works the other way round. There is no train from the airport: you first go into the city by bus to the main station, then take the EuroCity train to Dresden, about two and a half hours on the train alone. A few coaches a day call at the airport on their way north, but unless one fits your landing time you start from the city as well.
| Option | Time | What it is really like |
|---|---|---|
| Train | 3.5+ hours | Bus into Prague first, then the EuroCity from the main station. Comfortable once you are on it, but the airport leg and the wait add an hour or more, with all your luggage. |
| Coach | 2.5–4 hours | Cheap. Direct from the airport only if one of the few daily coaches fits your flight; otherwise a ride into the city and a change. |
| Private transfer | ~2 hours | From the arrivals hall to the door of your hotel, at any hour, with no changes. Priced per car. |
Where the driver meets you
Flights from outside Schengen, such as the UK, the US, Israel and the Gulf, land at Terminal 1; flights from Schengen countries at Terminal 2. Send us your flight number and the driver will be in the right arrivals hall, holding a board with your name, when you come out.
We follow the flight, so a delay moves the pick-up with it and costs you nothing. If passport control or baggage takes a long time, the driver waits.
The drive
From the airport the car joins the ring road and then the D8 north, past Ústí nad Labem and up through the hills of the Ore Mountains. At the border the motorway simply continues as the German A17; there is no stop, though Germany runs occasional spot checks, so keep your passport handy. The last stretch drops into the Elbe valley and into Dresden.
A stop on the way is easy to add: a coffee break, or a detour into Saxon Switzerland for the view from the Bastei. Tell us when you book.
Arriving in Dresden
We drive to the door of your hotel, whether it is in the old town by the Frauenkirche and the Zwinger, in the Neustadt across the river, or further out. Your luggage goes to the entrance, not to a station or a car park.
For the way back, see the transfer from Dresden to Prague, which also covers the drive straight to Prague Airport for your flight home. Planning to see Dresden in a day from Prague instead? See the Prague to Dresden day trip.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a transfer from Prague Airport to Dresden?
From 170 € per car, one way, for up to four passengers, and 180 € for a minibus for up to eight. The price is for the whole car, not per person, and it is fixed when we confirm the booking.
How long does the drive from Prague Airport to Dresden take?
About two hours for roughly 150 kilometres on the D8 and the A17. The airport is on the Dresden side of Prague, so the car does not have to cross the city.
Is there a train from Prague Airport to Dresden?
Not from the airport itself. You take a bus into Prague to the main station and the EuroCity from there, about two and a half hours on the train, so three and a half or more in all.
Is there a border check between the Czech Republic and Germany?
Both countries are in Schengen, so there is no regular border control, but Germany carries out spot checks near the border. Keep your passport or ID card with you.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Nothing, from your side. We track the flight by its number and move the pick-up time with it; there is no charge for waiting for a delayed plane.
Can we stop in Saxon Switzerland on the way?
Yes. The Bastei and the Elbe sandstone hills are a short detour from the route. Tell us when you book and we will price the stop and the extra time.
