Why only a fixed price works over this distance
Nobody runs an international journey on a taximeter: a meter counts kilometres and minutes, and four hours across two countries with toll roads turns it into a number that has to be negotiated separately. We name the sum in advance and include the Czech vignette and German road charges — there is nothing to pay along the way.
A licensed Czech taxi must carry a yellow roof lamp, the operator’s name and a price list on the door, a working meter, and must issue a receipt. A street car will most likely simply not drive to Berlin.
The drive
The route runs north on the D8, crosses the border near Petrovice, then the German A17 drops into the Elbe valley at Dresden and the A13 carries on into Berlin.
There is no passport control — both countries are in Schengen — but bring your document: spot checks are legal. Four hours is an honest figure including one stop. Summer Friday evenings and Sundays add twenty minutes getting out of Prague.
You can break the journey in Dresden, exactly halfway. A short stop costs nothing.
What is in Berlin
The Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag — the glass dome is free but requires advance registration. Museum Island holds five museums and is a UNESCO site. The East Side Gallery is 1.3 kilometres of painted concrete, the longest surviving stretch of the Wall. The Berlin Wall Memorial on Bernauer Strasse is more honest and more substantial than Checkpoint Charlie with its costumed actors. The TV tower on Alexanderplatz has a viewing platform at 203 metres.
