Flying Out of Prague Airport: How Early to Arrive, Terminals and Security
Prague’s Václav Havel Airport is small and easy to find your way around, but it has a few habits of its own: which terminal you use depends on where you are flying, Terminal 1 checks your bags at the gate rather than after check-in, and since autumn 2025 non-EU travellers are fingerprinted on the way out. Here is what to know before you leave for the airport.
The short answer: be at the airport 2 hours before departure if you are checking in a bag, and 2½–3 hours for a long-haul or other non-Schengen flight from Terminal 1.

1. How early to get to Prague Airport
Prague Airport recommends arriving at least two hours before departure if you have baggage to check in, and half an hour more — two and a half hours — for long-haul flights where you go through passport control.
For flights from Terminal 1 we would add a margin on top of that. The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) now takes fingerprints and a photograph of non-EU travellers on exit as well as on entry, and the first registration takes a few minutes per person. When several long-haul flights leave at once, passport control is where the time goes. For a flight to the UK, the USA, Turkey or Israel, two and a half to three hours is the comfortable choice.
Check-in and gate closing times are set by each airline, so check them on your booking as well.
2. Terminal 1 or Terminal 2?
The rule is simple: Schengen destinations leave from Terminal 2, everything else from Terminal 1. Your terminal is printed on the booking and shown on the departure screens. If you go to the wrong one, it is not a disaster: the two terminals are connected and the walk between them takes about five minutes.

3. Getting to the airport
Public transport to the airport is cheap and frequent. For the ordinary lines you need a regular Prague public transport ticket, bought before you board — from a machine, a ticket counter or the Lítačka app.
- Trolleybus 59 from Nádraží Veleslavín (metro line A), about 15 minutes. It replaced bus 119 in March 2024, so ignore older guides that still mention the 119.
- Bus 100 from Zličín (metro line B), about 18 minutes.
- Bus 191 via Petřiny (metro A) to Anděl (metro B), about 50 minutes — slow, but it saves a change if you are staying near Anděl.
- Airport Express (AE) from the main railway station (Praha hlavní nádraží). It has its own fare of 200 CZK, sold on board; ordinary public transport tickets are not valid on it.
- Night buses 907 and 910 run directly from the city centre when the metro is closed, about 45 minutes.

4. Parking and dropping someone off
The airport’s own car parks, as of 2026:
- Drop-off and pick-up (P1 Express, P2 Express, PB Economy): one free entry of up to 10 minutes per 24 hours; 11 to 30 minutes then costs 150 CZK.
- Short-term parking: 80 CZK per hour.
- Long-term parking (PA Smart, PC Comfort, PD Holiday): from 790 CZK for 8 days booked online. Without a booking it is 300 CZK for the first 24 hours and 500 CZK for each further 24 hours.
Online prices move with the dates and occupancy, so book on the airport’s parking site, aeroparking.cz. Private car parks a few minutes away are usually cheaper and include a shuttle — ask whether it runs at the time of your flight, which for a six o’clock departure decides everything.
5. Check-in and baggage
The departure screens in the terminal show your check-in counter. Have your passport or ID and booking code ready.
- Low-cost airlines: with Ryanair, Wizz Air and similar carriers, check in online and keep the boarding pass on your phone. Checking in at the airport desk costs extra, and with hand luggage only you can go straight to security.
- Through-checked bags: ask at the desk whether your bag goes all the way to your final destination. On a connection into the USA you collect it at the first airport and check it in again after customs.
- The bag tag: photograph the barcode sticker you get for your checked bag. If the bag goes missing, that number is the first thing the lost-luggage desk asks for.

6. Security: why Terminal 1 is different
Terminal 2 has a central security checkpoint straight after check-in. Since 1 October 2025 you may carry one extra container of liquids of up to 2 litres (cosmetics, food or drinks; alcohol only in its original retail packaging and up to 70%) on top of the usual 1-litre bag of 100 ml containers. In the lanes with CT scanners you do not have to take laptops or liquids out of your bag.
Terminal 1 works the other way round. After check-in and passport control you walk to your gate, and the security check is at the gate itself. The old rules apply there: only containers of up to 100 ml in one 1-litre bag, taken out of your luggage for screening. Gates open roughly 45 to 110 minutes before departure depending on the pier, so you cannot go through security much earlier than that — and if the gate queue is long, you are standing in it shortly before boarding.
7. Passport control and the EES
On a flight from Terminal 1 you go through passport control before reaching the gates. Since the EU’s Entry/Exit System started, travellers from outside the EU and the Schengen area give fingerprints and a photograph there; the first time takes a few minutes, later crossings are quicker. 8. Finding your gate
The gate number often appears on the screens only shortly before boarding; until then you see just the letter of the pier — A, B, C or D. Once the number is up, head there: even at a small airport the walk can take several minutes, and in Terminal 1 the security check is waiting for you at the gate.
One last habit worth building: the evening before, save your boarding pass, bookings, insurance and a copy of your passport offline on your phone. The airport has free Wi-Fi, but you do not want to depend on it at the check-in desk.
