How to Get from Prague to Mariánské Lázně
Mariánské Lázně — Marienbad to the Germans and the English who used to fill it — is 170 kilometres west of Prague, about two hours by road. It is the quieter of the two famous Bohemian spa towns, and since 2021 it has been on the UNESCO list as one of the Great Spa Towns of Europe.

Which one should you take
Going for a treatment course? Take the transfer. People arriving for a spa stay bring luggage for a fortnight, and the hotels are spread around the wooded slopes rather than clustered by the station.
Going to look for a day? The train is fine and pleasant, as long as you accept three hours each way and a hill at the end.
Doing the spa triangle? Then you want a car, and this is the real argument. Mariánské Lázně, Karlovy Vary and Františkovy Lázně form the West Bohemian spa triangle, all three on the UNESCO list together. They are 30 to 50 kilometres apart — twenty to forty minutes by road. By public transport, connecting them means going back out to a junction and waiting: what a car does in a morning takes a full day on rails.

What the town is like
Marienbad is a nineteenth-century resort built to be looked at: a cast-iron colonnade, a park that runs through the middle of everything, and pastel façades on the slopes above. Edward VII came here nine times; Goethe fell in love here at seventy-four; Chopin, Wagner and Kafka all took the waters.
The Singing Fountain in front of the colonnade plays on the hour through the season, which sounds like a tourist-board invention and is in fact rather good. There are around forty mineral springs in and around the town, six of them piped into the colonnade for drinking — bring a cup or buy the traditional spouted porcelain one.
It is smaller and greener than Karlovy Vary, with fewer coach parties. If Karlovy Vary felt too busy, this is the answer.
Practical notes
The station is below the town. Mariánské Lázně’s railway station is in the lower part, a good climb from the colonnade. There is a trolleybus; with luggage, it matters.
Spring water is free, the treatments are not. Drinking from the colonnade costs nothing. Anything with a doctor attached needs booking, usually well ahead.
The season runs May to September. The colonnade concerts, the fountain and most of the terraces are summer things; in February the town is beautiful and very quiet.
Karlovy Vary is 50 kilometres away, about 40 minutes by road — close enough to combine the two in a single day out from Prague.
