To Gdansk airport, for a flight
Most people make this trip to catch a plane. Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN) is about 12 kilometres from the centre of Gdansk, on the side the road from the border comes in, so there is no need to drive into the city at all.
Work backwards from check-in: add 3.5 to 5 hours for the road and the border, then add a margin. We bring the car at whatever time you name, including the middle of the night for an early departure. All CZtransfer needs is the pick-up address and your flight number.

A night departure for a dawn flight
Cheap flights out of Gdansk tend to leave at six or seven in the morning, and check-in closes 40 minutes before departure. Work the arithmetic backwards — 3.5 to 5 hours for the road and the border, plus a margin — and you are leaving Kaliningrad around two in the morning. Coaches are no help here: their services start at six, by which time your plane has gone.
So an early flight leaves two options. Travel to Gdansk the day before and pay for a hotel night, which adds a day and a room for everyone in the party. Or leave at night and arrive at the check-in desk directly, which is cheaper by the price of that room and shorter by a day.
Name the night departure when you book, with your flight number. We count the pick-up time back from the departure, leave a margin for the border, and bring the car to your door. You can sleep on the way — you clear passport control yourself, but the driver wakes you in good time.
Travelling with a pet
Dogs, cats and birds travel in the car with you, and this is where a transfer has no real competition. Coach operators generally will not take animals on an international service, and flying a pet through a connection is its own saga of carrier dimensions, weight limits and airline surcharges.
What you need to bring: a carrier or crate sized for the animal, and its veterinary paperwork — a passport showing a rabies vaccination, plus a microchip. Russian and EU requirements differ and are revised from time to time, so check the current list with a vet before you travel. The border checks the documents, and that is the one part of the trip we cannot handle for you.
Tell us about the animal when you book: how many, what size, and what they will travel in. We will pick a car where the carrier actually fits and brief the driver in advance, so it is settled before pick-up rather than at the kerb.
The drive and the border
It is about 35 kilometres from Kaliningrad to the Mamonovo checkpoint, then the Polish side at Grzechotki and the road on through Elbląg to Gdansk. Clearing the border takes anywhere from half an hour to several hours, depending on traffic, season and time of day.
What you need to have with you:
- A valid passport
- A Schengen visa, if your nationality needs one to enter Poland
- A birth certificate for a child, and a notarised consent if the child travels without a parent
- Driving your own car: an international licence, a Green Card and the vehicle registration
Taxi, coach or transfer
An ordinary city taxi will rarely take an international run — the driver needs the right documents and the willingness to sit out the border. Arranging one in advance usually ends up costing what a proper transfer costs anyway.
The coach is the cheapest option at 120–190 złoty, but it runs to a timetable, limits your luggage and joins the same queue. For four people, four tickets are already comparable to a car, without the door-to-door part.
