How the day runs
Two hours north on the motorway, with the last part following the Elbe through the sandstone gorges of Saxon Switzerland — the drive itself is worth looking up from your phone for.
You choose the departure time. The driver parks near the old town, which is compact enough that everything below is within a fifteen-minute walk of everything else, and meets you where and when you agreed. Five to six hours in the city is comfortable.
Passports. This crosses into Germany. Both countries are in Schengen, so there is normally no border check, but carry your passport or ID card — spot checks do happen.
What you see in Dresden
Dresden was flattened in February 1945 and the old town you walk through is a reconstruction, in places finished only in the last twenty years. Knowing that changes how it looks.
- The Frauenkirche — left as a heap of rubble for fifty years, rebuilt stone by stone with the original blackened blocks set back where they had fallen, reconsecrated in 2005
- The Zwinger — the Baroque palace complex, and inside it the Old Masters Gallery with Raphael’s Sistine Madonna
- The Green Vault — the Saxon treasury, one of the richest collections in Europe (book ahead for the historic rooms)
- The Fürstenzug — a 102-metre mural of the Saxon rulers made from around 23,000 Meissen porcelain tiles, which survived the bombing almost intact
- Brühl’s Terrace above the Elbe, and the Semperoper opera house
Why the old town looks like that
Dresden owes its skyline to one man with expensive taste. Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland from 1694 to 1733, spent on building what other rulers spent on armies: the Zwinger, the start of the royal collections, and the Baroque river front that earned the city its nickname, Florence on the Elbe. The Royal Palace behind it is still being finished, three centuries later.
The drive up is part of the day rather than a gap in it. The D8 motorway runs north out of Prague across the Czech uplands, becomes the A17 at the border and drops into the Elbe valley past the sandstone cliffs of Saxon Switzerland. About 150 kilometres, roughly two hours, and no border control — both countries are in the Schengen area.
A day trip is not the same as a transfer
If you are travelling on to Dresden and staying, a one-way transfer from Prague to Dresden is cheaper — the driver drops you and leaves.
The day trip keeps the car and the driver with you: no train timetable, no rushing back to a station, and your bags stay in the boot while you walk around.
