The drive
An hour and forty minutes south on the D3 through Tábor, motorway almost the whole way.
Hluboká is ten kilometres from České Budějovice and thirty-five from Český Krumlov, so it is rarely a trip on its own: usually it is one stop on a southern Bohemian day.
What is in Hluboká
The château you see today was built by the Schwarzenbergs between 1841 and 1871, modelled on Windsor Castle. The result is the most photographed building in southern Bohemia: white towers, crenellated walls, 140 rooms and 11 towers above a bend in the Vltava.
Inside are the state rooms with carved ceilings, tapestries and an arms collection, plus a winter garden and orangery. The English park around it is free to walk in, and the former riding hall holds the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery. Two kilometres away, the Ohrada hunting lodge has a forestry museum and a small zoo — a good option with children.
Worth knowing: the interior can only be seen on a guided tour, there are several routes, and in high season the next available slot may not be soon. Buy tickets in advance on the château’s own site.
