The drive, and the climb
Forty minutes on the D5 and then along the Berounka. It is the only destination on our list that genuinely works as a half day.
One thing to know: cars are not allowed up to the castle. The driver takes you to the car park in the village, and from there it is a 20–25 minute walk uphill along a cobbled street lined with souvenir shops. In summer you can ride up by horse carriage or electric buggy, but walking is more predictable. Sensible shoes help.
What is in Karlštejn
Charles IV founded the castle in 1348 not as a home and not as a border fortress but as a safe: the imperial coronation regalia and a collection of holy relics were brought here.
The heart of it is the Chapel of the Holy Cross in the Great Tower. The walls are set with semi-precious stones and hung with 129 panels by Master Theodoric — the largest collection of medieval panel painting in Europe still standing where it was made for.
Tour route I covers the state rooms and Charles IV’s apartments, runs all year, and tickets are usually available. Tour route II is the chapel itself: it does not run all year, admits a strictly limited number, and must be booked well ahead.
Nearby are the Koněprusy caves, 8 kilometres away and the largest cave system in Bohemia, and the vineyards below the castle.
