Why a car matters here in particular
The main sights of Kutná Hora are four kilometres apart. The ossuary and the Cathedral of the Assumption are in Sedlec, at the edge of town; St Barbara’s Cathedral and the Italian Court are in the historic centre. Walking between them takes about an hour and the local bus is infrequent.
The train takes about an hour and costs 100–150 CZK, but Kutná Hora hlavní nádraží sits three kilometres from the centre: Sedlec is beside the station, the old town is not. Either way you need a second form of transport once you arrive.
A car with a driver closes that gap: you are carried between the sites and waited for. For a day trip that is the whole argument.
What is in Kutná Hora
In the fourteenth century this was the second city of the kingdom after Prague — silver was mined here and the Prague groschen was struck, a coin used across Europe. The historic centre is a UNESCO site.
St Barbara’s Cathedral was built by the miners themselves in honour of their patron saint; Petr Parléř’s son began it and it took two centuries to finish. The frescoes showing minters and miners at work are rare for a church of this rank.
The Sedlec Ossuary is decorated with the bones of some forty thousand people: a chandelier using every bone in the human body, and the Schwarzenberg coat of arms picked out in vertebrae. Photography inside has been banned since 2020 and the ban is strictly enforced.
There is also Santini’s Cathedral of the Assumption in Sedlec, another UNESCO site, the Italian Court with the royal mint, and Hrádek with a descent into a medieval silver mine.
