What is in Kolín
The town leads two lives: an old core above the Elbe and a major industrial hub.
The Gothic chancel of St Bartholomew’s church was built by Petr Parléř, the architect of St Vitus Cathedral and Charles Bridge in Prague. The Jewish quarter has a seventeenth-century synagogue and one of the oldest Jewish cemeteries in Bohemia, with stones from the fifteenth century. In June the town hosts Kmochův Kolín, a brass band festival named after František Kmoch, who was born here. On the field outside stands a monument to the battle of 1757, where the Austrians defeated Frederick the Great for the first time.
