The drive
Fifty minutes west, with the last fifteen kilometres along the Berounka on a forest road. This is already the Křivoklátsko biosphere reserve, and the drive is part of the day.
What is in Křivoklát
A royal hunting castle and one of the oldest in the country — the first buildings went up under the Přemyslids in the twelfth century. Unlike Karlštejn it was barely touched by romantic rebuilding, so inside it looks genuinely medieval.
The Great Tower is a thirteenth-century keep with a viewing platform and a prison at the bottom. The Royal Hall is the second largest Gothic hall in the country after the Vladislav Hall at Prague Castle. There is a late Gothic chapel with a carved altar and the Fürstenberg library of more than fifty thousand volumes. Rudolf II held the English alchemist Edward Kelley in the dungeons after he failed to produce gold.
Ten kilometres away is the royal Krušovice brewery; fifteen brings you to the Nižbor glassworks and to Lány with the president’s residence.
