The drive
Fifty minutes west, with the last fifteen kilometres along the Berounka on a forest road. This is already the Křivoklátsko biosphere reserve, and the drive is part of the day.
Public transport takes a long time: the train with a change at Beroun runs about two hours, and the local branch line has a thin timetable. That is why Křivoklát is usually done with a driver.

Křivoklát is a royal hunting castle and one of the oldest in the country — the first buildings went up under the Přemyslids in the twelfth century. Unlike Karlštejn it was barely touched by romantic rebuilding, so inside it looks genuinely medieval rather than restored for the postcard.
