The drive
Two and a half hours on the D1 towards Brno, then north into the Svratka valley. The last twenty kilometres are a narrow road along the river through woodland.
Hardly anyone comes here by public transport: train to Brno, then a branch line to Nedvědice, with changes and a thin timetable. The castle is off the main roads, which is part of why it survived so well.
Why people go to Pernštejn
Pernštejn is one of the best-preserved Gothic fortresses in Central Europe. It was built and extended from the thirteenth century to the sixteenth and, more to the point, it was never taken — not by the Hussites, not by the Swedes in the Thirty Years’ War. What you walk through is the real thing, not a reconstruction.
Its other name is the marble castle: the portals and window surrounds are cut from a pale local stone that looks like marble from a distance.

- The barbican and the defensive bridge — few places in the country preserve the whole fortification system this completely
- The knights’ hall and the library, with eighteenth-century painted decoration

Pernštejn is a frequent film location, so if the walls look familiar, they probably are.
