The drive
Two and a half hours on the D1 through Jihlava towards Brno, then north towards Blansko. The road is fast, and the driver checks the D1 roadworks before setting off.
Public transport takes a long time and two changes: train to Brno, on to Blansko, then a local bus or the eco-train to the cave entrance. Nearly four hours each way, and the evening timetable thins out.
Why people go to the Moravian Karst
This is the largest karst area in the country: more than a thousand caves in the limestone north of Brno. Five are open to visitors, and the one that matters is the Punkva caves.
The route through them is theatrical: first on foot through dry galleries of stalactites, then out onto the floor of the Macocha abyss — a sinkhole 138 metres deep — and back by boat along the underground Punkva river. Nothing else in the country combines all three.
- Macocha — a cable car runs to the upper rim, giving the view from the top down
- Kateřinská cave — the largest accessible underground hall, used for concerts because of the acoustics
- Balcarka — coloured formations, the most ornamental of the five
- The Sloup-Šošůvka caves — two-level chasms and traces of cave bears
Important: entry to the Punkva caves is by timed slot, and in summer tickets sell out weeks ahead. Book on the caves’ own site first, and we will fit the car around your slot. It is about 8 °C underground all year — bring a jacket even in a heatwave.
Brno is half an hour away and Pernštejn castle about an hour.
