The drive
The whole route runs on the D1, the main artery of the country, which links Prague with Brno and carries on to Ostrava. The road is straight and dull, but fast.
One thing worth knowing about the D1: it has been modernised section by section for years, and roadworks narrowings appear and disappear each season. The driver checks the situation before setting off and takes a diversion if needed, so two and a half hours is a figure with margin rather than a best case.
Why people go to Brno
Brno is the second city of the Czech Republic and the capital of Moravia, and it is nothing like Prague: fewer tourists, more students, cheaper restaurants.
The things worth the trip:
- Villa Tugendhat — Mies van der Rohe, 1930, and a UNESCO monument. Tickets sell out weeks ahead, so book before you travel
- Špilberk — the fortress above the city, used by the Habsburgs as a prison for political prisoners
- The ossuary at St James — the second largest in Europe after the Paris catacombs, holding around 50,000 people
- The Cathedral of St Peter and Paul — where noon is rung at eleven; the trick is said to have saved the city from the Swedes in 1645
- The Masaryk Circuit — a MotoGP round, and the whole city is full on race weekends
Half an hour from Brno is the Moravian Karst, with the Macocha abyss and the underground Punkva river. Plenty of people take the car for a full day and combine the city with the caves.
Train, coach or car
- Train — 2 hours 30 minutes, 200–400 CZK. Frequent departures from Praha hlavní nádraží in comfortable carriages, and Brno’s station is central, which helps
- Coach — about 2 hours 30 minutes, usually cheaper than the train. You arrive at the bus station and still have to get into the centre
- Private transfer — about 2 hours 30 minutes, €165 per car. Door to door, on your schedule, with luggage and child seats. It makes sense when there are three or four of you, when you have suitcases, or when you have a meeting at a fixed time
