Transfer from Prague to Ostrava

The drive
The route runs on the D1 through Jihlava and Brno, then east towards Olomouc and Ostrava. It is the only sensible way to drive it; everything else is longer.
Three and a half hours is an honest unhurried figure including one short stop. Roadworks on the D1 are a permanent feature, and the driver checks the situation before setting off. In winter the Vysočina stretch can be snowy, and time is allowed for that.
Ostrava is also a convenient jumping-off point: Katowice in Poland is about 100 kilometres further, Kraków 220, and Žilina in Slovakia 100. If your journey continues across the border, say so at the start and we will price the whole thing.
Why people go to Ostrava
Ostrava is the third city of the country and no kind of postcard. Coal was mined and steel was made here, and everything that makes the city interesting today is built out of exactly that.
- Dolní Vítkovice — a former ironworks in the middle of the city, turned into a cultural quarter. You can walk through the blast furnaces, and one of them carries the Bolt Tower viewing platform
- Landek Park — a mining museum with a descent into a real gallery
- Stodolní street — the legendary bar street that pulls in half of Moravia at weekends
- Colours of Ostrava — a large July festival held inside the Vítkovice site. Hotels sell out months ahead for it
- The Beskydy mountains — an hour away, hiking in summer and skiing in winter
Train, coach or car
- Train — from 3 hours 10 minutes on the Pendolino, 300–600 CZK. The sensible choice for two people travelling light. Ostrava-Svinov station is out of the centre and you still need a tram
- Coach — four hours and more, cheaper than the train, though over this distance the difference in comfort tells
- Private transfer — about 3 hours 30 minutes, €250 per car. Door to door, with luggage, children and a stop whenever you want one. Usually chosen by families and by people travelling for work with equipment
