Leaving Prague
Why there is no meter
Over ninety minutes of driving a taximeter reaches a total you only see at the end — and in winter it quietly adds the minutes spent crawling up to the town in snow. We name the price in advance:
- €90 per car one way, up to 3 passengers
- Per car, not per seat
- Traffic, snow and waiting at pick-up add nothing
- An eight-seat minivan, or a same-day return, is quoted separately
How this differs from a street taxi
A licensed Czech taxi must carry a yellow roof lamp, the operator’s name and a price list on the door, a working meter, and must issue a receipt. On this route, though, the real problem is not the price but the luggage: with skis and snowboards you simply will not fit into a random car. Booked ahead, we send a vehicle with a rack — tell us how many sets.
The drive
The route runs north-east on the D10 through Mladá Boleslav, then a short stretch of the I/35 into Liberec. Ninety minutes is a real door-to-door figure.
In winter this direction has its own rules: the Jizera Mountains and the Krkonoše begin immediately behind the town, and heavy snow slows the climb. Our cars run on winter tyres as Czech law requires, and for mountain villages the driver checks the forecast before setting off.
What is in Liberec
The town sits in a basin between the Jizera Mountains and Ještěd, and most reasons to come here involve the mountains.
Ještěd is a 1,012-metre peak with a hotel tower on top — Karel Hubáček’s 1973 cone, reached by cable car. The town hall is very nearly a copy of Vienna’s, only smaller. Babylon is an indoor complex with an aquapark and a funfair, the answer to a rainy day with children. Downhill runs are on Ještěd and at Bedřichov, and half an hour south the rock towns of Bohemian Paradise begin.
