The drive
The route runs north-east on the D10 through Mladá Boleslav, then a short stretch of the I/35 into Liberec itself. The road is fast and ninety minutes is a real door-to-door figure.
In winter this direction has its own rules: the Jizera Mountains and the Krkonoše begin immediately behind the town, and heavy snow slows the climb up to Liberec. Our cars run on winter tyres as Czech law requires, and for mountain villages the driver checks the forecast before setting off.
Why people go to Liberec
Liberec sits in a basin between the Jizera Mountains and Ještěd, and most reasons to come here involve the mountains.
- Ještěd — a 1,012-metre peak with a hotel tower on top. After Prague it is the most recognisable building in the country: Karel Hubáček’s 1973 cone, which continues the line of the mountain itself. A cable car runs up, and the restaurant at the summit is worth booking
- The town hall — very nearly a copy of Vienna’s, only smaller, with the square in front of it
- Babylon — a large indoor complex with an aquapark, a funfair and an aquarium; the answer to a rainy day with children
- The Jizera Mountains — cycling routes and waterfalls in summer, cross-country skiing in winter. Downhill runs are on Ještěd and at Bedřichov
- Bohemian Paradise — rock towns half an hour south, Hrubá Skála and Trosky
Train, coach or car
- Coach — the fastest public transport, 1 hour 05 minutes from Černý Most metro station, about 120 CZK. Frequent departures, but tight with skis and suitcases
- Train — there is no fast direct service; with a change it takes 2 hours 40 minutes or more. For this direction the train loses
- Private transfer — about an hour and a half, €90 per car. Door to door, with luggage and skis, on your schedule. For a group going up for a weekend it usually works out easier and no dearer than a coach plus taxis at both ends
