Leaving Prague
Why there is no meter
Four hours, two borders and two vignettes: on a route like this a taximeter stops being a useful instrument, and the price would have to be discussed separately anyway. We name it in advance:
- €300 per car one way, up to 3 passengers
- Per car, not per seat
- The Czech and Austrian vignettes and all charges are included
- An eight-seat minivan is quoted separately
The drive
The route runs south on the D3 through Tábor and České Budějovice, crosses the border at Dolní Dvořiště and continues on Austrian roads through Linz onto the A1 to Salzburg.
Four hours is the figure with one stop. There is no passport control, but bring your document. In winter the Austrian stretch requires winter tyres, which our cars carry as standard.
Salzburg is the natural gateway to the Austrian Alps: Berchtesgaden and the Eagle’s Nest are 30 kilometres away, Hallstatt 70, and the Zillertal and Saalbach resorts about an hour. If you are coming to ski, send the resort village at the start.
What is in Salzburg
The city sits between two hills on the Salzach, and the historic centre is a UNESCO site.
Hohensalzburg, one of the largest fully preserved fortresses in Europe, stands on the crag above the city and is reached by funicular. Mozart’s birthplace on Getreidegasse dates from 1756, and the street itself, hung with wrought-iron signs, is the most photographed in the city. Mirabell Palace and gardens hold the steps from The Sound of Music. Hellbrunn, with trick fountains that soak the guests, works very well with children.
The Salzburg Festival in July and August fills the city and doubles accommodation prices. The Christmas market on Domplatz is one of the oldest in Europe.
