Why only a fixed price
Four hours on a taximeter is a number nobody will quote in advance. Add two countries, two vignettes and toll roads, and on an international route the meter becomes something to argue about.
We fix the sum in the confirmation and include both the Czech and the Austrian vignette and all road charges. There is nothing to pay along the way.
A licensed Czech taxi must carry a yellow roof lamp, the operator’s name and a price list on the door, a working meter, and must issue a receipt. A street car will most likely simply not drive to Vienna.
The drive
The route runs south-east on the D1 through Jihlava and Brno, then the D2 to the border at Mikulov and the Austrian A5 straight into Vienna.
There is no passport control — both countries are in Schengen. Four hours is an honest figure including one stop. The driver checks D1 roadworks before setting off; in winter Austria requires winter tyres, which our cars carry.
You can break the journey in Brno or at Mikulov with its wine cellars. A short stop costs nothing.
What is in Vienna
Schönbrunn, the Habsburg summer residence, has 1,441 rooms and a park with the Gloriette; entry is by timed slot and worth booking ahead in summer. The Hofburg is the winter residence, with the imperial apartments, the Sisi Museum and the treasury. St Stephen’s Cathedral: the south tower, 343 steps, the whole city below. The Belvedere holds Klimt’s Kiss. The Prater has the 1897 Ferris wheel from The Third Man.
Viennese coffee house culture is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list — Central, Sacher, Landtmann. The Christmas markets on Rathausplatz and at Schönbrunn run from mid-November.
The Parndorf outlet is 40 kilometres beyond the city.
