Route from Vienna to Prague

If you were going to rent a car
A lot of people reach this page after searching for a one-way car hire from Vienna to Prague, so it is worth setting out what that actually involves before you book one.
Collecting a car in Austria and leaving it in the Czech Republic is an international one-way rental, and three things come with it. There is a one-way international fee on top of the daily rate, and on this pair of countries it is usually the largest single line on the bill. The rental agreement has to allow taking the car across the border at all — several companies restrict it, and the ones that permit it want telling in advance. And a car hired in Austria carries an Austrian vignette, not a Czech one: the Czech motorway toll is a separate electronic vignette you have to buy yourself before you join the motorway on the other side.
Then you still drive the four hours. And you arrive in Prague with a car to park, in a city where parking in the centre is restricted and expensive, for the rest of your stay.
A transfer takes all of that away. The fare is fixed at 350 € for the car before you set off, both vignettes are ours, the driver does the four hours, and when you get out in Prague there is no car to look after.

Train, bus, plane or car
This is a well-served route and we are not going to pretend the alternatives are bad. The honest comparison:

The drive
We leave Vienna northwards on the A22 along the Danube and then the A5 through the vineyards of the Weinviertel, crossing into the Czech Republic at Drasenhofen just above Mikulov. From there the D52 runs north to Brno, the second city of the country, and at Brno the D1 turns west for Prague.
There is no regular border control, as both countries have been in the Schengen area since 2007, but Austria runs occasional checks on this border, so keep your passport or ID card handy.
Stops on the way
The first hours out of Vienna cross the most interesting corner of Moravia, and a transfer lets you turn the transit into the day itself. None of these stops costs extra; they simply lengthen the drive.
- Mikulov — a wine town under a castle, twenty minutes past the border, and the natural first stop.
- Lednice and Valtice — an entire landscape laid out as a garden by the Liechtenstein family, with two chateaux, on the UNESCO list.
- Znojmo — medieval cellars dug under the town and a rotunda from the eleventh century.
- Telc — a UNESCO square of pastel Renaissance houses that looks like a stage set, on the last stretch towards Prague.
Two or three hours added to the drive turn a transfer into a private day out that finishes in Prague instead of back where it started. For four people it usually costs less than a guided excursion, and you choose where to stop.
Arriving in Prague
We take you to the door of your hotel or apartment in any district, including the lanes of the old town where cars are otherwise restricted. If you are flying on, we drive to the right terminal at Vaclav Havel Airport instead — say so when you book.
For an early flight out of Prague we leave Vienna at night. There is no night surcharge.
