Pick-up in Prague
Why there is no meter
Ninety minutes on a taximeter is a number you learn on arrival. We name it in advance:
- €85 per car one way, up to 3 passengers
- Per car, not per seat
- Traffic, the hour and waiting at pick-up add nothing
- An eight-seat minivan, or a trip with waiting, is quoted separately
How this differs from a street taxi
A licensed Czech taxi must carry a yellow roof lamp, the operator’s name and a price list on the door, a working meter, and must issue a receipt. On this route, though, people usually travel with kit: canoes and paddling gear for the Otava will not fit into a random car. Tell us what you are bringing when you book and we send something suitable.
The drive
The route runs south-west on the D4, a road upgraded to full expressway in recent years. An hour and a half is a real door-to-door figure.
From Písek the whole of southern Bohemia is close: České Budějovice 50 kilometres, Český Krumlov 65, the Šumava mountains about an hour.
What is in Písek
The building that matters here is the Stone Bridge over the Otava, built around 1265. It is a century older than Charles Bridge in Prague and the oldest surviving stone bridge in the country — and you can walk across it without a crowd.
The town’s name comes from the word for sand: gold was panned from the Otava, and the gold-bearing sand paid for Písek in the Middle Ages. The trade ended long ago, but gold-panning championships are still held on the river.
Twenty kilometres away is Zvíkov castle on its crag above the meeting of the Vltava and the Otava, and twenty-five brings you to Orlík above the reservoir. The neighbouring village of Putim is where the Good Soldier Švejk ended up.
