The drive
The route runs south-west on the D4, a road upgraded to full expressway in recent years. An hour and a half is a real door-to-door figure.
Písek stands on the Otava, within easy reach of the whole of southern Bohemia: Český Krumlov is 65 kilometres away, České Budějovice 50, and the Šumava mountains about an hour.
Why people go to Písek
The building that matters here is the Stone Bridge over the Otava. It was built around 1265, a century before Charles Bridge in Prague, and it is the oldest surviving stone bridge in the country. Everyone knows the Prague one; this one stands quietly, and you can walk across it without a crowd.
The town’s name comes from the word for sand: gold was panned from the Otava, and the gold-bearing sand paid for Písek in the Middle Ages. The trade ended long ago, but gold-panning championships are still held on the river.

- The royal castle with the Prácheň Museum — the surviving wing of the Přemyslid palace
- The Otava — embankments and weirs, with canoe trips in summer
- Zvíkov castle, 20 kilometres away — «the king of Czech castles», on a crag above the meeting of the Vltava and the Otava
- Orlík castle, 25 kilometres away — the Schwarzenberg residence above the reservoir
- Putim — the neighbouring village where the Good Soldier Švejk ended up during his Budějovice anabasis
Train, coach or car
- Coach — the practical public option, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Prague, 100–150 CZK
- Train — with a change, two hours and more. There is no fast direct service
- Private transfer — about an hour and a half, €85 per car. It earns its place if you are coming with canoes, heading for Zvíkov and Orlík, or going on into the Šumava, where public transport is thin
