The drive
The road runs south on the D3 through Tábor. It is good and almost entirely motorway, so two hours is an honest door-to-door figure rather than an optimistic satnav estimate.
Friday evenings and Sundays can add twenty minutes getting out of Prague — the southern road is popular with Czechs heading for their cottages and the Šumava mountains. In winter the stretch beyond Tábor occasionally sees snow, and the driver leaves with time in hand so you are not late for your hotel.
Why people go to České Budějovice
The town is built around Přemysl Otakar II Square, one of the largest square plazas in Central Europe — 133 by 137 metres, with the Samson Fountain in the middle and arcades running the whole way round. From the top of the 72-metre Black Tower you can see the square and the whole Vltava valley.
The second reason people come is the Budweiser Budvar brewery. This is the original Budweis beer, the one the Czech brewery has been arguing over with its American namesake for more than a century. The tour with a tasting in the cellar takes about an hour and is worth booking ahead. We have written separately about the Budweiser Budvar range.
České Budějovice is also a good base for going further: Hluboká nad Vltavou castle is only 10 kilometres away and Český Krumlov 25. Plenty of people book the car for a full day and take in the whole southern Bohemian loop in one trip.
Train, coach or car
All three work; which one suits you depends on how many of you there are and how much luggage you have.
- Train — 2 hours 15 minutes, roughly 200–250 CZK. Departs from Praha hlavní nádraží and the carriages are comfortable. The station in Budějovice is a 15-minute walk from the square, which you notice with suitcases.
- Coach — about 2 hours 20 minutes, 150–200 CZK, the cheapest option by a clear margin. Book ahead in summer; the southern routes sell out.
- Private transfer — about two hours, €120 per car. Door to door, on your schedule, with suitcases and child seats. For three or four people it works out close to the cost of four train tickets, without the changes or the platform wait.
