A licensed Czech taxi must carry a yellow roof lamp, the operator’s name and a price list on the door, a working meter, and must issue a printed receipt. Checking all that on the pavement is not the best start to a journey. Booked ahead, the car, the driver’s name and the sum arrive in the confirmation, and a receipt at the end.
This route has a second story: the works. Factories and logistics parks around Ústí sit well away from the station, and a street driver has to be talked into going there at all. We deliver to the gate address.
The drive
The route runs north-west on the D8 past Terezín and drops into the Elbe valley. An hour is a real door-to-door figure, and the road is motorway almost the whole way.

What is in Ústí nad Labem
An industrial city at the confluence of the Elbe and the Bílina, badly bombed in the war. People come for what is around it rather than for the architecture.
Střekov is a castle on a crag above the Elbe, where Wagner stayed. The leaning church of the Assumption is more than two metres off vertical — the second largest deviation in Europe after Pisa. A funicular runs from the shopping centre up to the Větruše lookout chateau. All around are the volcanic hills of the Central Bohemian Uplands, with Milešovka at 837 metres, and forty kilometres away Bohemian Switzerland begins with the Pravčická brána.
