Transfer from Prague to Budapest
Prague and Budapest are the two ends of most central European itineraries, and 525 kilometres apart. By road it is about six hours; by train, closer to seven. The road also happens to pass through the middle of a third capital, which is the argument for doing it by car.

Over 525 kilometres the door-to-door difference is larger than the timetable suggests. A train journey of seven hours is really eight and a half once you add getting to Praha hlavni nadrazi and out of Budapest Keleti with luggage.
Bratislava is on the way
This is the part most people do not realise when they book a train. The road to Budapest runs directly through Bratislava — three and a half hours from Prague, two more to Budapest — and the old town is ten minutes off the motorway.
An hour or two in Bratislava turns the transfer into a day that takes in three capital cities. The old town is small and walkable, the castle sits above the Danube, and lunch there costs a fraction of what it does in either Prague or Budapest.
The stop costs nothing extra — it simply lengthens the drive. Tell us when you book so the driver plans the timing.
Vienna is also within reach of the same road, about forty minutes off the direct route. If you would rather see that instead, say so — the price does not change for a short stop, and a longer one is quoted before you travel.
The drive
We leave Prague on the D1 heading south-east to Brno, take the D2 down to the Slovak border, pass Bratislava, and then join the Hungarian M1 across the plain to Budapest. Three countries, all in the Schengen area, so there is no border control anywhere on the route.
Motorway vignettes are required in all three, and they are included in the price — you do not need to think about them.
Arriving in Budapest
We take you to the door of your hotel or apartment, on either side of the river. Budapest is two cities that merged in 1873 — Buda on the hills with the castle, Pest flat and gridded across the water — and they are far enough apart that being dropped at the wrong station costs you a real amount of time.
If you are flying on, we drive to the right terminal at Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport, which is well outside the city to the south-east.
One practical thing: Hungary does not use the euro. Prices are in forint, and unlike the Czech Republic and Slovakia you will need some. Cards are widely accepted in the centre, but the thermal baths and the market halls are easier with cash.
