Transfer from Prague to Munich
Prague to Munich is 380 kilometres and a little over four hours by road. It is also the one route out of Prague where the car is not a luxury but simply the faster option — the direct train takes closer to six.

Why the train is slow on this route
Prague and Munich are not far apart, but the railway between them was never modernised. The direct service runs on a single-track line through the Bohemian Forest, and the journey takes around six hours — longer than Prague to Vienna, for a shorter distance.

The drive
We leave Prague westwards on the D5 past Plzen, cross into Germany at Rozvadov, and pick up the A6 towards Nuremberg before turning south on the A9 to Munich. German motorways have no toll for cars, and much of the A9 has no speed limit, which is part of why the road wins so comfortably against the railway.
Worth knowing if you are travelling in autumn: during Oktoberfest, from mid-September to the first weekend of October, Munich hotels and every form of transport fill up months ahead. Book early, and expect the last few kilometres into the city to be slow.
Stops worth making
Plzen — forty minutes out of Prague and the home of Pilsner Urquell. The brewery tour takes about two hours, and you are not the one driving.
Regensburg — a UNESCO old town on the Danube with a medieval stone bridge, almost exactly halfway and barely off the motorway.
Nuremberg — the castle, the old town, and in December one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany.
None of these costs extra; they simply make the day longer. Tell us when you book and we will plan the timing around them.
Arriving in Munich
We take you to the door of your hotel in any district, or to the right terminal at Munich Airport, which is thirty kilometres north-east of the city and awkward to reach any other way from the Czech side.
For an early flight we leave Prague at night, and there is no night surcharge.
