Why there is no meter
Four and a quarter hours on a taximeter is a figure that would have to be negotiated separately. We name it in advance and include the Czech vignette and all road charges. For Oktoberfest that matters even more: in late September everything in the city is taken, and a street car is either unavailable or unpredictably priced.
A licensed Czech taxi must carry a yellow roof lamp, the operator’s name and a price list on the door, a working meter, and must issue a receipt. Booked ahead, there is nothing to check.
The drive
We leave Prague westwards on the D5 past Plzeň, cross into Germany at Rozvadov, and continue on German motorways towards Regensburg and the A9 into Munich. German motorways have no toll for cars, and much of the A9 has no speed limit. Four and a quarter hours is an honest figure including one stop; in winter the Bavarian stretch can be snowy and the driver leaves with margin.
Both countries are in Schengen, but Germany runs temporary checks at its land borders, the Czech one included, so every passenger should carry a passport or national ID card.
Stops worth making
Plzeň — forty minutes out of Prague and the home of Pilsner Urquell. The brewery tour takes about two hours, and you are not the one driving.
Regensburg — a UNESCO old town on the Danube with a medieval stone bridge, almost exactly halfway and barely off the motorway.
Nuremberg — the castle, the old town, and in December one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. The Ingolstadt Village outlet is also roughly on the way.

Transfer, coach or train?
This is the one route out of Prague where the railway is the slow option: the direct train runs on a single-track line through the Bohemian Forest and takes around six hours. The coach from Florenc is faster, about five hours, and cheap, with fixed departures and limited luggage, arriving at Munich’s central bus station. A private transfer takes about four and a quarter hours door to door and is priced per car, so for three or four people with suitcases it costs about the same as coach tickets plus a taxi at each end.

If you were thinking of renting a car
Taking a Czech hire car into Germany has to be declared, and leaving it in Munich makes it an international one-way rental — the drop-off fee is often the largest single line on the bill. Central Munich is a low-emission zone, and every car entering it needs the green Umweltplakette sticker that Czech hire cars often do not carry. Parking in the old town is scarce and expensive, and during Oktoberfest close to impossible. A transfer is a fixed €350 for the car, the driver handles the four hours and the zone rules, and there is no car to return.
Arriving in Munich
We take you to the door of your hotel in any district, to the Messe exhibition centre, or to the right terminal at Munich Airport (MUC), thirty kilometres north-east of the city and awkward to reach any other way from the Czech side. For an early flight we leave Prague at night, with no night surcharge.
What is in Munich
Marienplatz and the New Town Hall with the Glockenspiel, which plays at 11 and 12, and at 5 in summer. Nymphenburg, the summer residence of the Bavarian kings, with an enormous park. The Deutsches Museum, the largest science and technology museum in the world, needs a full day. BMW Welt and the BMW Museum. The English Garden is bigger than Central Park, and people surf the Eisbach wave all year round. The Hofbräuhaus is the beer hall — loud and touristy, and still worth a look.
Twenty kilometres out is the Dachau memorial on the site of the concentration camp.
Oktoberfest runs from mid-September to early October: two and a half weeks when hotel prices multiply and cars are booked out well ahead. Munich is also the base for the Bavarian castles — Neuschwanstein is two hours away.
