Why there is no meter
Forty minutes on a meter does not sound like much. But people come to a spa for a course of treatment, with suitcases for two or three weeks, and luggage in the Czech Republic is usually charged on top. With us it is in the price, and the total is known in advance.
A licensed Czech taxi must carry a yellow roof lamp, the operator’s name and a price list on the door, a working meter, and must issue a printed receipt. Booked ahead there is nothing to check: the car and the driver’s name arrive in the confirmation.
The drive
Forty minutes east on the D11 makes this the closest spa town to Prague. The road is expressway the whole way, and the only delays are leaving the city at rush hour, which the driver allows for.
Being this close changes the logic of the trip: a day in Poděbrady is entirely realistic. Plenty of people book the car with waiting — treatments, lunch, a walk along the colonnade, and back in the evening.
What is in Poděbrady
A cardiac spa on the Elbe. The mineral spring was found in 1905, when Prince Bedřich Schwarzenberg, an enthusiastic dowser, pointed at a spot in the castle courtyard and the drilling proved him right.
The spa colonnade and park are the main promenade, with drinking springs. George of Poděbrady, the only Czech king not of royal blood, was born in the castle in 1420; his equestrian statue stands on the square. The spa houses treat the heart and circulation. Poděbradka mineral water is bottled here, and there is a glassworks in town.
