Transfer from Prague to the Bavarian Castles
Neuschwanstein is about 500 kilometres from Prague — roughly five hours on the road. A private transfer costs from €400 for the whole car one way. To be straight with you: Ludwig II’s castles are not a day trip from Prague, and here is why.

Why one day does not work
Five hours each way is ten hours of driving, plus two or three hours at the castle itself. That means leaving at five in the morning, getting back around midnight, and spending most of the day in the car.
There are two realistic ways to do it:
- With an overnight stay. Day one is the drive and Hohenschwangau, day two is Neuschwanstein and the journey back. People usually stay in Füssen or Schwangau
- Via Munich. Take a Prague to Munich transfer, stay the night, and drive out to the castles the next day — Füssen is only two hours from Munich. This is what most people do

Ludwig II’s castles
The Bavarian king built three castles and emptied his treasury doing it. None was fully finished in his lifetime, and he lived in them for only a matter of months.
- Neuschwanstein — the silhouette Disney drew its logo from. Begun in 1869 as a built version of Wagner’s operas. Only part of the interior is open; the rest was never completed
- Hohenschwangau — the yellow castle opposite, where Ludwig grew up. Often skipped, and it should not be: it was actually lived in and feels far more human
- Linderhof — the only one Ludwig saw finished. Small, ornate, with a Venus grotto and a dining table that rose from the kitchen so the king never had to see a servant
- Herrenchiemsee — a copy of Versailles on an island in the Chiemsee. You reach it by ferry, which adds an hour to the day
About tickets: Neuschwanstein can only be seen on a timed guided tour, and tickets must be booked online in advance — in season they go weeks ahead. From the ticket centre in Hohenschwangau it is a 30–40 minute walk uphill to the gate, or a shuttle bus or horse carriage. The Marienbrücke, which gives the classic view of the castle, is often closed in winter.
