The drive
The route runs on the D5 through Plzeň to Rozvadov, crosses the border there and continues on the German A6 through Waidhaus and Amberg. There is no passport control — both countries are in the Schengen area — but bring your document anyway: spot checks are legal and do happen.
Three and a half hours is an honest figure including one stop. Parts of the German autobahn here have no general speed limit, but that changes nothing on a transfer: we drive at a steady pace.
Why people go to Nuremberg
Nuremberg is the second city of Bavaria, and one of those places where the twentieth century sits directly beside the Middle Ages.
- The Kaiserburg — the imperial castle above the city, where every Holy Roman Emperor stayed
- Albrecht Dürer’s house — the painter lived here for twenty years, and the workshop has been recreated inside
- The Hauptmarkt with the Schöner Brunnen and its golden ring, which you are supposed to turn for luck
- The Nazi Party Rally Grounds and the Documentation Centre — a heavy but important place, presented plainly and without rhetoric
- Courtroom 600 in the Palace of Justice — where the Nuremberg trials were held, now open as the Memorium
- The food — thin grilled Rostbratwurst served three to a bread roll, and Nuremberg Lebkuchen
The Christkindlesmarkt is the best-known Christmas market in Germany and opens on the Friday before the first Sunday of Advent. Hotels and roads are stretched during those weeks, so book the car early. We have written separately about Christmas market day trips from Prague.
Train, coach or car
- Coach — 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours direct, €20–40. The cheapest option
- Train — no direct service; with a change at Schwandorf or Munich it takes five hours and costs more than the coach
- Private transfer — about 3 hours 30 minutes, €240 per car. Door to door, on your schedule. For three or four people it is comparable to coach tickets, without a bus station at either end
