Why there is no meter
Six hours on a taximeter is a number nobody will quote in advance, and on an international run it turns into haggling by eye. We fix the sum in the confirmation and include the Czech vignette and all road charges.
For a connection through FRA that matters: you pay a known figure and arrive at the terminal at a calculated time, rather than settling the price with a driver before your flight.
The drive
We leave Prague westwards on the D5 past Plzeň and cross into Germany at Rozvadov, about two hours out. From the border the A6 runs to Nuremberg, and the A3 turns north-west through Würzburg to Frankfurt. Germany does not toll private cars. This is the longest of our regular German runs; roadworks on the A3 around Frankfurt can add half an hour in the afternoon, and in winter the Bavarian stretches can be snowy.
Both countries are in Schengen, but Germany runs temporary checks at its land borders, the Czech one included, so every passenger should carry a passport or national ID card.
Stops worth making
Five hours is long enough that a break is welcome, and on a private transfer it can be somewhere worth stopping.
Plzeň — forty minutes out of Prague, with the Pilsner Urquell brewery beside the motorway.
Nuremberg — the walled old town and the castle, roughly halfway and the natural lunch stop.
Würzburg — the Residenz, a UNESCO baroque palace, on the last stretch into Frankfurt.
Bamberg — a UNESCO old town on the water, a short detour off the A3.

Transfer, train or plane?
This is the one route out of Prague where flying is worth considering: an hour in the air, but with the trips to both airports, check-in and security the day still comes to four or five hours. There is no direct train — you change, usually in Nuremberg, and it takes six to seven hours. A private transfer takes about five hours door to door with no changes and is priced per car: for two people it is dearer than a flight booked ahead, for four with suitcases it usually is not. It wins clearly for groups, heavy luggage, and departures at hours when nothing flies — an early Messe morning or a late arrival into Prague.

If you were thinking of renting a car
Leaving a Czech hire car in Frankfurt makes it an international one-way rental, and on a 530-kilometre run the one-way fee is often the largest line on the bill. You also drive the five hours yourself, which is the part most people underestimate. Frankfurt is a low-emission zone too: cars entering it need the green Umweltplakette sticker, which Czech hire cars often lack, and during a big Messe week parking near the fairground is close to impossible.
Who books this
Connections through FRA. Frankfurt is one of the main hubs in Europe, flying to places Prague has no direct service to. Five hours by road with a guaranteed arrival time is more reliable than a connecting flight that can be delayed.
Trade fairs. Messe Frankfurt is one of the largest exhibition sites in the world. During the big fairs taxis in the city are all taken, while a car with a driver runs from your hotel door to the right hall entrance.
If you are here as a tourist: the Römerberg with its half-timbered houses, the museum embankment with the Städel, the Palmengarten, the apple wine taverns of Sachsenhausen — and the skyscrapers of the only real business district in Germany.
Arriving in Frankfurt
We take you to the door of your hotel or apartment, to a Messe entrance during a trade fair, or to the right terminal at Frankfurt Airport, twelve kilometres out of the city. For an early flight out of Frankfurt we leave Prague at night, with no night surcharge.
From Frankfurt to Prague
The other way round costs the same: €350 per car, €400 for the minivan, from the city or from Frankfurt Airport.
